Australs Archipelago
Located in the southernmost part of French Polynesia, the Australs constitute an archipelago with a total area of approximately 152 km2. Stretching over a length of 1,317 km, the archipelago is 573 km from Papeete for the closest island (Rurutu) and 1,301 km for the farthest (Marotiri). It takes 1h30 to reach the Austral Islands from Tahiti. Famous for its rich culture, its cliffs and caves, the archipelago is sometimes called Tubuai Islands after its largest island. On the sea side, humpback whales can be observed from August to October, when they come to give birth.
